Viral Video Shows Yet Another Case of Misconduct By Philadelphia Police Officer With Long History of Trouble

The recent television and print media coverage of the viral video depicting Philadelphia Police Officer William Gress using extraordinary force against a civilian highlights a critical point concerning the lack of discipline for officers in the Philadelphia Police Department with histories of misconduct.  Our firm has brought at least four separate lawsuits against Officer Gress (see below for the complaints in each case): all of them involved baseless arrests and the use of excessive force by Officer Gress and all of them have been settled by the City of Philadelphia.  Despite these lawsuits and the numerous others mentioned in the media reporting on this latest incident, Officer Gress remains on patrol on South Street.  How the Philadelphia Police Department handles disciplinary action in this case will tell us a lot about how seriously the Department takes its responsibility to ensure that its officers do not cause unnecessary harm to civilians.
